Distinguished Guest Speaker:

Kevin Murakami
Consul General of The U.S. in São Paulo

Kevin Murakami, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister Counselor, comes to São Paulo after serving as Director of the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Section at U.S. Embassy Bogota.  In this role, he oversaw the implementation of $1 billion in U.S. security programs.  He previously was the Economic Counselor in U.S. Embassy Mexico City, where he managed the largest economic section in the Western Hemisphere.  Prior to that assignment, he served as the State Department’s Acting Deputy Coordinator for Cuban Affairs.

Kevin was the Political-Economic Chief and Deputy Principal Officer in U.S. Consulate General Rio de Janeiro, where he helped develop and execute bilateral initiatives to support the 2016 Rio Olympics, 2014 World Cup, and the development of Pre-Salt offshore hydrocarbon reserves.  He also served as the head of the Public Diplomacy section in U.S. Consulate General Karachi, in addition to political, economic, and public diplomacy assignments in Baghdad, Bogota, and the Kyrgyz Republic.  In Washington, Kevin also worked as a senior Desk Officer supporting North African economic and security integration and as the Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary for Oceans, Environment, and Science.

Kevin holds Master’s degrees from the National War College and Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. He graduated from the University of California Davis, and his foreign languages include Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, and Japanese.
